‘Float-on-Air’ Cushions

At Checkmate, when we say no job too big or too small, we mean it. Recently, our work was featured in Miscellany: The Magazine of the Morgan Sports Car Club, as our Inflatable Cushions were used in a 1965 Morgan +4 Super Sports due to the original manufacturer no longer operating.

You can read the excerpt from the magazine below:

‘Float-on-Air’ Cushions

In the past the seats in Morgans with a bench (I haven’t seen them in bucket seats) had an air cushion. Of course, one in each seat. In the past they were made by a company called: Moseley & Sons in Manchester. It’s not a surprise that cushions like that, of that age are no longer leak proof. I still had those seats in my 1965 Morgan +4 Super Sports, but one wasn’t usable any longer. Luckily I had a spare one, but realised myself that if something happens with one of those air cushions, the car couldn’t be used anymore in the way I like it.

I had contact with Ian Cummings about the beautiful boxes he produced as a reminder of the “60 years after Le Mans 1962” and by coincidenceI told him about the situation with the air cushions. Ian told me that some years ago he found a company who made a new set for his Plus 4 Super Sorts. The problem is, that “Moseley” doesn’t exist anymore. It became a long story, but in the end I found a company who in the past were connected with the company Ian told me about. The company is Checkmate Flexible Engineering Ltd. Unit 6, Pegasus Way, Bowerhill, Melksham, Wiltshire, SN12 6TR. Phone: 01225 705465. After some emails/phone calls I had contact with the right people: Kyle Lake (General Manager) klake@checkmateflex.com and Lesley Cole (Sales & Business Administration) lcole@checkmateflex.com

They, Kyle and Lesley, call them Inflatable Cushions, because you can inflate them with the same air pump you need for the tyres of your car. The original ones had a “valve” in a way that you have to blow the cushion the oral way! They advised me to use Schrader valves. That’s the same type you see on the tyres of your car. It works perfectly and you can reach the right pressure to your personal choice easily. I paid £260 excl. VAT. They are made of very solid rubber and work perfectly well.
