A Day In The Life Of A Quality Process Engineer

A Day In The Life Of A Quality Process Engineer

In the world of manufacturing and engineering, precision, consistency, and quality are paramount. Whether it’s the tyres that grip the road, the seals that keep our vehicles airtight, or the countless other products that rely on rubber, the importance of quality cannot be overstated.

Yet, the intricate processes that transform rubber into finished products are often hidden from view, leaving us with a limited understanding of the expertise and meticulous work that goes into ensuring that each item meets the highest standards.

We sat down with Ben Lomas-Milne, Checkmate Flexible Engineering’s Quality Process Engineer. In this interview, we speak to Ben about his unique insights into the challenges, innovations, and dedication required to guarantee that our rubber products are not only reliable but exceptional. Through this interview, we’ll explore the expertise, technology, and passion that drive the quality process at a leading rubber manufacturing company!

Can you provide an overview of your role as a Quality Process Engineer at Checkmate and how it contributes to the company’s success?

I like to think my role assists in the team’s desire to maintain Checkmate’s reputation for good quality. My roles range from regulatory compliance to maintaining the company’s quality and process systems to ensure consistent product quality.

What does a typical day look like?

There probably isn’t a typical one! We don’t have a ‘same day’, because we’re always continuously looking for new challenges in the business. But, one thing I always try to do each day is walk around the shopfloor and follow up with the team on processes we’ve implemented to find out what difference it’s made.

There’s no point just implementing a process and then not following up with the people involved, because the easiest thing in the world is coming up with the idea. The hard part is actually implementing and then sustaining those ideas.

So we prioritise lots of hands-on communication; going to speak with the team, tweaking things, and getting their ideas as well.

How does Checkmate address and adapt to changing industry regulations and standards to ensure product quality and compliance?

We at Checkmate stay informed by establishing a system for monitoring and staying updated on industry-specific regulations, standards, and best practices. Collaboration with regulatory bodies is key whilst investing in research and development to innovate and find new ways to produce compliant and high-quality flexible components.

Adapting to changing industry regulations and standards is essential for any business. By proactively addressing and adapting to the changing industry regulations and standards, Checkmate can not only ensure compliance but also maintain product quality, reputation, and competitiveness in the market.

How does Checkmate integrate feedback from customers and clients into its quality improvement processes?

Checkmate encourages open and transparent communication with our customers by valuing their feedback.

We always integrate their feedback into our quality improvement process by multiple methods such as root cause analysis and trend analysis on our key performance indicators. All this enables us to update quality processes, manufacturing procedures, and product designs based on the insights gained from customer input. These steps not only enhance product quality but also build stronger customer relationships and maintain a competitive edge in the market.

How does Checkmate maintain a culture of continuous improvement and quality excellence throughout the organisation?

We know that embedding a culture of continuous improvement and quality excellence within the organisation demands consistent effort, a structured approach and an unwavering commitment to excellence from every stakeholder involved.

Checkmate recognises that the workforce is an invaluable resource. By empowering employees through training and development they can acquire the skills necessary to identify inefficiencies and suggest improvements. Encouraging ownership of processes leads to a more engaged and proactive workforce.
