Portable Anchor Systems

Working at height safely means having the right anchor in the right place to attach a safety harness or fall arresting device. On many sites, that means a portable anchor: a freestanding, repositionable anchor point that provides an attachment without requiring permanent fixings to the structure beneath.

What is a portable anchor?

A portable anchor is a temporary, freestanding anchor point designed to allow workers to attach harnesses and fall arresting devices  when working at height. Unlike fixed permanent anchor points, which are bolted or chemically bonded into a structure, a portable anchor system is self-supporting. It derives its resistance to fall forces from its own mass, friction, or a combination of both, rather than from structural attachment.

Portable anchors are positioned on the work surface before work begins, connected to a worker’s personal fall protection equipment via a lanyard or fall arrest device, and repositioned as the work progresses. When the task is complete, the anchor is removed, leaving no trace on the surface.

This makes portable anchor systems the preferred solution wherever:

  • The structure cannot accommodate drilled or fixed anchor points
  • The roof surface is sensitive or must remain watertight
  • Access is needed on a temporary or infrequent basis
  • The work location changes across the roof area
  • A cost-effective alternative to permanent systems is required

Equipment types

Types of portable anchor systems

Steel deadweight anchors are the traditional solution. They provide mass through the weight of the steel itself, which is effective but creates a significant transport and handling challenge. On multi-storey buildings or sites without vehicle access to the roof, moving a steel portable anchor can require multiple operatives or mechanical handling equipment.

Water-ballast systems are a more practical alternative. The anchor arrives on-site empty and lightweight, then is filled with water from a nearby supply once positioned. Water is dense enough to provide several hundred kilograms of ballast, and it is available on or near most work sites. This approach reduces the manual handling burden considerably and simplifies logistics across multi-site programmes.

Sand-ballast systems follow a similar principle but are less widely used in rooftop environments. Tripod and frame anchors serve a different purpose: designed for confined space access and vertical applications, they are the appropriate choice where the anchor point needs to be elevated above the access point, such as over a manhole or access hatch.
